Temporary Halt Of Starr Subp na; 'Vox' Sales Up Calvin Reid -- 4/20/98
U.S. District court judge Norma Holloway has ruled that independent counsel Kenneth Starr must show a "compelling need" to gain access to the book-purchasing records of Monica Lewinsky. Starr has subp naed Lewinsky's check and credit-card records from two Washington, D.C., bookstores, Kramerbooks and the Georgetown Barnes &Noble.
The bookstores were hoping to quash the subp na but, although the judge expressed concern over its possible "chilling effect" on First Amendment rights, she did not dismiss Starr's subp na. As PW went to press, Chris Finan, president of the American Booksellers Association Foundation for Free Expression, told PW that the judge had given Starr more time to show how the information is critical to his investigation.
