Tribune Sees Faster Growth in Consumer Unit -- 4/20/98
With the addition of Landoll (acquired last November), the Tribune Co. expects sales to the consumer market to generate 35% of the education group's revenues in 1998, compared to 26% last year. According to Tribune's annual report, the consumer group (through NTC/Contemporary) had revenues of approximately $59 million last year and produced more than 700 titles.
The education group's supplemental education division (grades K-8) represented 63% of total revenues, or $142 million last year. To help expand the education unit's exposure abroad, the company acquired Shortland Publications last fall for $32 million. Shortland, based in New Zealand, has been made part of the Wright Group, for which it has provided content for several years. Shortland will continue to maintain a 44-person product-development team in Auckland and a 20-person sales and marketing office in London.
The third part of the education group, high school and adult, contributed 11%, or $25 million in revenue. Tribune said it expects total revenues for the education group, which hit $226 million last year (News, Feb. 9), to more than double by 2000 through both internal growth and acquisitions.
