Fifth Anniversary for O'Reilly's Travelers' Tales
Katayoon Zandvakili -- 4/20/98

Travelers' Tales Inc., a travel guide series founded and distributed by computer publisher O'Reilly &Associates, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year with plans to double its list of titles from 15 to 30.

Tim O'Reilly, president of O'Reilly (based in Sebastopol, Calif.), launched Travelers' Books in 1993 with his brother James. Their first title, Thailand, won the Lowell Thomas Award for Best Travel Book.

Sales of the press's city and country guides have risen steadily, increasing 27% from 1996 to 1997. A Woman's World and Gutsy Women - which has more than 40,000 copies in print - have been bestsellers. "Our total sales increase was 64%, which is pretty significant," reported marketing director Leili Eghbal. "We're venturing into new markets with Love &Romance [for which the press ran a story contest] and A Dog's World." To celebrate its anniversary, the press is publishing a collection of some of its best writing, The Gift of Travel: The Best of Travelers' Tales, due out in June. Also in the works are travel humor, misadventure and food books. "The premise of the series is based on storytelling and the notion that other people's words are the best guide to places you've never been," said Eghbal.
