When Backtalk Pays Off
Daisy Maryles -- 4/20/98

With attitudinal behavior at epidemic proportions among the nation's youth, authors Audrey Ricker and Carolyn Crowder seem to have hit the right nerve with their new bestseller, Backtalk: 4 Steps to Ending Rude Behavior in Your Kids. So far, Fireside has gone back to press five times (bringing the in-print total to 166,500 copies) and has added an additional 10 cities to the authors' original eight-city tour; also in the works is a second radio-drive tour. Response from parents and educators who want to book the authors for various programs has been tremendous, including a school in California that has booked Ricker for a seminar aimed at both parents and teachers. Ricker, while visiting in her hometown of Tucson, Ariz., observed an elderly gentleman buying multiple copies of Backtalk. When she expressed curiosity about the potential recipients, the customer informed Ricker they were going to his grown children so that they in turn could handle his (obviously less than perfectly behaved) grandchildren.
