Cahill's Gifts
Daisy Maryles -- 4/20/98

Thomas Cahill, former Doubleday religion publishing director, is now on his second career, as the publisher's bestselling author. The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels, his latest book in a projected seven-part series called The Hinges of History, is in its second week on the national charts with 128,000 copies in print after four trips to press. Cahill's first book, How the Irish Saved Civilization, spent 54 weeks on PW's trade paper list, and to date has more than 700,000 copies in print. That work has been translated into six European languages, plus Japanese. For his newest book, the author spent two years as a visiting scholar at New York City's Jewish Theological Seminary of America, learning Hebrew so that he could study the Old Testament. His 20-city tour includes stops at churches and synagogues. Another sign of interdenominational opportunities for the book is that it was bought by the Jewish, Catholic, History and One Spirit Book Clubs, in addition to being a BOMC main selection.
