Bernstein to Leave John Wiley
Calvin Reid -- 5/11/98

After seven years as publisher-at-large for John Wiley and Sons, Robert L. Bernstein, the former chairman and president of Random House, is leaving Wiley and will set up offices in Manhattan to continue his publishing consultancy and human rights projects.

Bernstein described his relationship with Wiley as "wonderful... I am indebted to the Wileys in many ways." While at Wiley, Bernstein directed his own publishing program specializing in books on human rights and current affairs. Among the titles he published were Bitter Winds by Harry Wu; Black Hands of Beijing: Lives of Defiance in China's Democracy Movement by George Black and Robin Munro; and Have No Fear by Charles Evers and Andrew Szanton.

Bernstein's new offices will be located at 10 East 53rd St. in Manhattan. He currently advises several authors, in addition to working with the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Public Library.
