In the Kids' Corner
-- 5/18/98

Though the words "Dr. Seuss" are featured prominently on the jacket, the latest Seussian creation from Random House, Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! was actually written by Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by Lane Smith, based on notes and sketches found in Ted Geisel's studio after he died in 1991. The Seuss name is still golden, it's clear; in its first month of publication Diffendoofer Day zoomed to the very top of our picture book list, with 350,000 copies in print.Another not completely unexpected success is If You Give a Pig a Pancake, the second sequel to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, written by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond (HarperCollins/Geringer). Mouse has sold more than 1.3 million copies since its publication in 1985; Pancake bows at #2 on our list, and is already in its second printing with 150,000 copies in print. Two other titles landed on the list thanks to a promotion and a plug. As part of National P try Month last month, Harcourt Brace promoted six of its spring p try titles, in a P try Jamboree Kit (6000 were printed). Then two of the featured books -- Antarctic Antics by Judy Sierra, illustrated by Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey, and Insectlopedia: P ms and Paintings by Douglas Florian -- got a big boost when Daniel Pinkwater mentioned them on NPR's Weekend Edition in early April. Both ended up on our list, Antarctic Antics at #4 and Insectlopedia at #7.
