Summer Reading Heats Up

Three new fiction bestsellers land this week. Taking the #4 spot on the list is John Sanford's Secret Prey, the ninth book in his bestselling Prey series that began in 1989 with Rules of Prey. Putnam has 293,000 copies in print and is supporting the book with national TV and a 20-city book signing tour. Prey #8, The Night Crew, rounds off the mass market list; Berkley has 1,265,000 copies in print after two trips to press.Judy Blume's third adult novel, Summer Sisters (her first since 1984's Smart Women), lands in the 12th spot. Delacorte has 115,000 copies in print after five trips to press. Blume is finishing up a book-signing tour that included stops in 14 cities, the last on Martha's Vineyard, the main setting for the book. The publisher created a Web site exclusively for the book www.summerssisters.com, where Blume relates the story of her relationship with her own long-time best friend, Mary Weaver, to whom she dedicated the book. Blume is also busy promoting the book on her own Web site -- www.Judyblume.com; there she is also chronicling her tour via her "Anxiety Diary."Cormac McCarthy's fans were quick to buy the third and final volume in his Border Trilogy, Cities of the Plain. Total copies shipped is 185,000 and that's after a pre-pub 10,000-copy second printing. McCarthy's trilogy began in 1992 with All the Pretty Horses (it enjoyed a 25-week run on PW's charts and went on to win both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle award). The Crossing followed two years later, also to stellar reviews and an 11-week run on our weekly charts. Earlier this month, Matt Damon was cast to play the lead in the film version of All the Pretty Horses, which begins shooting next spring and will be directed by Billy Bob Thornton. Knopf reports that as usual, the reclusive author did not grant any interviews, but sightings continue to be reported in and around his hometown of El Paso, Tex.
