Perle McKenna Joins HarperSF

Elizabeth Perle McKenna, previously v-p and publisher of the Hearst Book Group, will be joining Harper San Francisco as editor-at-large, beginning in June. Publishing director Diane Gedyman said she is "delighted to have someone of Liz's caliber join the staff."The arrangement, in fact, could not have been more serendipitous. Perle McKenna, who left the Hearst Book Group three years ago to write a book, When Work D sn't Work Anymore: Women, Work and Identity (Delacorte, 1997), chose earlier this year to move to San Francisco and continue writing. San Francisco was where she began her career -- at Harper &Row -- "and those who know me," she said, "know that I've been trying to get back ever since." The position at HarperSF brings her life full circle. Perle McKenna left Harper &Row to join Bantam Books in New York in 1983, where she rose to become associate publisher for hardcover and trade paperbacks. In 1989 she went to Simon &Schuster's Prentice Hall Press, where she founded Prentice Hall Parkside Publishing, an imprint dedicated to recovery and spiritual titles. Her author list included Melody Beattie and Anne Wilson Schaef. Two years later she moved to Addison-Wesley, where she published such authors as Hope Edelman and Dr. T. Berry Brazelton. In 1994 Perle McKenna was hired by the Hearst Book Group to oversee William Morrow and Avon Books. Perle McKenna's strong nonfiction background, marketing experience, and hands-on knowledge of the spiritual publishing field make her an ideal fit for HSF, Gedyman noted.
