Hot Deals: Sex-Change Novel is Koster's First Deal
Judy Quinn -- 6/1/98

The Danish Girl, a novel by Random House publishing manager David Ebershoff, is the first hot property for former Dutton/ Signet president-turned agent Elaine Koster. This in-progress first novel, "inspired" by the story of the 1920s Danish painter who was the first man to undergo a sex-change operation, attracted best bid offers from three publishers. Koster's former Penguin Putnam colleague, Viking's editorial director Barbara Grossman (with Jonathan Burnham to serve as editor), won with a rumored $300,000 offer for the novel and a collection of short stories. Ebershoff's work has already been anthologized in Men on Men and Best American Gay Fiction.
