The news on May 21 that a suspended high school student in Oregon had opened fire on his classmates has provided unfortunate new material for Dr. James Garbarino's book proposal Lost Boys, which was won, for a rumored low-six-figure advance, just before, on May 18, by Free Press editor Phillip Rappaport in an auction held by agent Victoria Sanders. Garbarino, director of the Family Life Development Center at Cornell, was featured in People magazine a few weeks ago discussing the earlier killings in Arkansas, and last week he was called in for commentary on this breaking story. Garbarino's book, to address the phenomenon of boys who kill, will most likely be published a year from now.
