New Hires, Redesign At B&N.com -- 6/1/98
Barnesandnoble.com has appointed four new executives to its management team, including a couple of well-known publishing figures. Among those joining the Internet bookseller are Brenda Marsh, formerly president of sales at HarperCollins, and Tom Simon, a longtime bookstore executive and the creator of the Muze database and kiosk. The two other new executives are Rob Chmiel, formerly v-p of finance and operations for Disney Online, and Melissa Lake Roberson, a one-time consultant to Amazon.com who also helped launch SimonSays.com while working at Simon &Schuster.At barnesandnoble.com, Marsh will serve as v-p of merchandising; she will be responsible for all merchandising and editorial operations as well as publisher relationships. Simon will focus on content and database acquisition strategy as v-p of content development. Roberson was appointed v-p and executive editor and will oversee the site's day-to-day editorial operations. Chmiel has taken over as chief financial officer. All four executives will report to barnesandnoble.com COO Jeff Killeen and all will join B&N.com by early June. Site Redesign; New Deals Barnesandnoble.com also launched an extensive redesign of its Web site, introducing a less complex, crisper graphic interface; reorganized its navigation; and added a software store, SoftwareForPCs.com in conjunction with Intel, offering 1000 titles, an express one-click ordering button, a new search engine and more. B&N.com also announced a partnership with Angelfire, a community with more than 750,000 personal Web pages, that allows members to become B&N. com affiliates. Amazon.com is reported to have more than 30,000 affiliates. About 7000 sites are B&N.com affiliates. B&N.com has also announced an "exclusive" partnership with ABC.com. Back To News---> |
