Avon Launches Twilight, New Mystery Imprint
Diane Patrick -- 6/15/98

In the latest move to expand and refocus its publishing programs, Avon is launching Twilight, a new mystery imprint set to begin publication in September. The new line will feature original and reprint titles from both new and established authors, in hardcover, trade paper and mass market formats.

Ten to 12 hardcovers and four trade paperbacks per year are planned, together with four mass market paperbacks per month. The first Twilight list includes The Ape Who Guards the Palace: An Amelia Peabody Mystery by Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Elizabeth Peters (who at Avon is reunited with her former editor, Trish Grader); The Shaman's Game by James D. Doss; and No Hiding Place: A Tamara Hayle Mystery by Valerie Wilson Wesley. Other authors include Carolyn Hart, Peter Robinson, Margaret Lawrence and Jill Churchill.

Spearheading the new imprint is senior editor Jennifer Sawyer Fisher, who noted that "Avon has always published mystery authors. We have quite a few bestselling authors in the mystery arena, but the imprint now gives us a platform."

The list will launch with signings at stores across the nation via the Marvelous Mystery Tour, a bus tour bringing authors to retailers in cities nationwide, with particular attention to mystery specialty stores. Twilight will also be featured on the interactive Avon Books website.

The Twilight imprint marks Avon's third imprint launch within a year, following the February relaunch of Bard, its literary fiction and nonfiction imprint, and the SF line Eos, which made its debut in August 1997.
