Hot Deals: 'Bastard' Gets Legit Money

Tentatively titled first novel Eddie's Bastard by 27-year-old William Kowalski sparked a significant bidding frenzy last week, with agent Anne Hawkins finally accepting HarperCollins adult trade senior v-p Marjorie Braman's rumored $400,000 offer for a two-book, world-rights deal. The novel, which Braman described as evoking the styles of Wally Lamb and John Irving, centers around the aging, surviving member of a once-wealthy upstate New York clan who one day finds the bastard child of his son, who was killed in Vietnam, left on his doorstep. Kowalski acquired an agent the modern way: he searched the AOL user bios to find literary agents, and contacted Hawkins via her e-mail address. Irv Schwartz of Renaissance is handling film/TV rights.
