Capital Books Is New D.C. House
Calvin Reid -- 6/15/98

Books International, a Washington, D.C.- based distributor of foreign titles, took advantage of this year's BookExpo to launch a new nonfiction book publishing unit called Capital Books.

The publisher of the new imprint is Kathleen Hughes, former publisher of Acropolis Books Ltd. and the director of International Publishers Marketing, the marketing and sales affiliate of Books International. Hughes told PW that Capital Books will specialize in nonfiction titles by authors with a talent for public speaking on specialized topics or those linked with professional associations. "We're interested in markets outside the bookstore that can support the bookstore," she said. Capital's program, said Hughes, emphasizes established professional consultants who can act as a kind of sales representative to the general market for their books in scheduled appearances around the country. "We want books that have created their own industries," said Hughes.

Capital Books will publish five new titles in the fall of 1998, among them Color for Your Every Mood: Discover Your True Decorating Colors by Leatrice Eiseman; The Profit Game How to Play-How to Win by Barry R. Schimel and Gary R. Kravitz; and Tea &Etiquette: Taking Tea for Business and Pleasure by Dorothea Johnson. Capital already has an established distribution, shipping and library sales system through Books International and its warehouse just outside Washington, D.C. IPM, BI's marketing affiliate, will provide commissioned sales representatives. BI has about 30 foreign publishing clients providing marketing expertise through IPM and acting as the U.S. office for its publishing clients.
