Summer Reading Heats Up
-- 6/15/98

As the summer reading season gets underway, competition on the hardcover bestseller charts is very stiff, with many new books vying for a spot in the top 15. At the same time, books that have already made the charts continue to generate hefty sales. Below we list 10 runners-up for both hardcover lists; sales for these books, all of which are hovering just below #15, are also very close to each other. The summer bestseller race is generally different from the fall/winter season -- when store traffic and sales are at their peak, higher unit sales are needed to crack the charts. Consider that at Barnes &Noble last week, there were 58 hardcover books with sales of 1000 copies or more for the week ending June 6; the highest number was just a bit over the 5500 sales mark. In any week in December, there are three to four times as many books with sales of 1000 or more and about 25 to 30 bestsellers with sales of 5500 or more (and at that time of the year, more can mean sales of 30,000-plus for certain titles).
