Monumental Longevity
-- 6/29/98

Ten years after Louis L'Amour's death, a collection of his never-before-published frontier short fiction, Monument Rock, debuts on the national charts. It's the author's 116th book, all of which are still in print with at least one million copies each. Since L'Amour died in 1988, Bantam estimates that it has shipped 40 million copies of his frontlist (12 new books and collections have been published since then) and backlist. Currently, there are more than 250 million L'Amour books in print worldwide; the latest has 207,000 copies in print. L'Amour's wife, Kathy, and son, Beau, have been involved in the ongoing publication effort and did several interviews on the June 10th anniversary date -- one, a front-page piece that day in the New York Times Arts section, was titled "The Proust of the Prairies Gallops On." There are plans for several additional hardcovers of as-yet-uncollected short stories for annual publication in the years to come.
