Random House Steps Up Role With Sierra Club
-- 7/13/98

Random House has increased its involvement with Sierra Club Books and now will serve as a co-publisher for the association's new titles. Random has distributed Sierra Club books since 1982 and will now take responsibility for manufacturing and marketing as well. Random will also acquire titles for Sierra Club Books, with editorial input from Sierra Club. Between 30 and 35 new adult titles are planned for 1999. Sierra Club published 33 titles in 1997, but its output fell to 18 this year.

The move will have little effect on Sierra Club Books staff, since most of the activities being taken over by Random had been outsourced or done on a freelance basis. The unit will, however, add one new editor, and Helen Sweetland will remain publisher. The new arrangement will also mean that Beth Gibson, formerly director of business affairs for the Random House adult trade group, will become publishing director for books and calendars published under the Sierra Club imprint. Gibson will report to Walter Weintz, president of the Random House Information Group.
