WK Shedding Literary Imprints
Herbert R. Lottman -- 7/20/98

Wolters Kluwer is about to clear up an anomaly, its ownership of a collection of Dutch general literary imprints -- which in fact is the country's number-two trade group -- when just about everywhere else, Wolter's acquisition of publishing assets has been followed by breaking off anything smacking of trade. The Utrecht-based Veen Publishing Group, which includes leading logos Contact, Luitingh-Sijthoff and Kosmos, with annual sales of $50 million and a payroll of some 125, will change hands in an MBO assisted by a venture capital company. Veen's managing director Bert de Groot, who expects the new dispensation to go into effect next January 1, will continue as the Dutch equivalent of publisher and CEO.

Perhaps the best-known among Veen assets is Luitingh-Sijthoff, which has been the Dutch home for the likes of Danielle Steel, Scott Turow, Robert Ludlum and Mary Higgins Clark. The Atlas imprint at Contact d s Walter Mosley, V.S. Naipaul and Patrick O'Brian, with Norman Lewis and Paul Theroux on the travel list. Kosmos Z&K specializes in practical and guide books, Van Dale is market leader in Dutch dictionaries.
