Nora Roberts, the author of more than 100 novels and a fixture on the national charts, jumped onto the #2 spot on our mass market list with Rising Tides, the second book in the Chesapeake Bay trilogy. Jove reports that the book's first printing of 1.6 million had to be augmented almost immediately with an additional 100,000 copies. In her first week in the stores, Roberts outsold Cornwell at the national chains but Cornwell stayed ahead in most other retail venues. When Roberts's fans finish Rising Tides, they'll find a preview of the trilogy's final volume, Inner Harbor, coming in January.
