It was a longshot for Longstreet. The Southern publisher debuted The Millionaire Next Door, by Thomas Stanley and William Danko, in fall 1996 with a first print run of 20,000. Its first promotion act was to send galleys to reporters at the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press. Both ran pieces that were picked up by wire services and by the end of January 1997, the book was on the national charts. Currently, after 30 trips to press, the book boasts 1,010,000 copies in print. Millionaire was the number one hardcover business book of 1997 and it seems to be a strong contender for the title for 1998.
