Arthur Golden's remarkable first novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, published last October, will enjoy a second year of fall sales in hardcover -- thanks to Vintage, which has agreed to postpone its trade paper edition until January. Now, in light of the paperback postponement, Knopf is gearing up for what is turning out for them to be the Year of the Geisha. The house has just ordered its 29th printing (10,000), bringing the total in print to 367,000; first printing was 35,000 copies. Steven Spielberg, who purchased the film rights, begins production in October. In October and November, the author will be visiting bookstores nationwide. Making the rounds also are the beautiful vintage kimonos that Knopf supplied bookstores for use in displays.
