'Lolita' Heats Up
-- 8/10/98

Vintage began preparing for the Lolita film about two years ago when it first stickered copies with a gold circle that read: "Soon to be a Major Motion Picture." Lolita had premiered in Europe at that time but Adrian Lyne's controversial film of the book had trouble getting to the big screen. It finally premiered August 2 on the cable TV network Showtime, the only distributor willing to take on the picture starring Jeremy Irons, Dominique Swain, Melanie Griffith and Frank Langella. The film -- which garnered the highest Showtime rating in the past two years -- has been getting a lot of press attention because reviewers were almost unanimously impressed and now Samuel Goldwyn Films has reached a deal with Showtime to distribute the film in theaters nationally beginning September 25. To meet demand, Vintage printed 65,00 more copies, bring the in-print total of its edition to 350,000. Also fueling the Lolita fire is the much-discussed Modern Library list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century, on which Lolita is #4. The book has begun showing up on the reports of independent booksellers and the national chains.
