Bookstore Sales Up 2% in October

Bookstore sales were sluggish in October, according to preliminary figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Bureau reported total October bookstore sales of $929 million, a 2.1% increase over October 1997. Sales for the entire retail segment rose 6% in October. For the first 10 months of 1998, bookstore sales were up just under 3%, to $10.26 billion.
