Becker to Head NEA Lit. Program

Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 1/25/1999

Cliff Becker, formerly acting director of the literature program at the National Endowment for the Arts, has been named its permanent director.

Becker began working at the NEA, in 1992, as a specialist in p try and literary publishing. He has been the acting director of the literature program since July 1997.

Becker told PW that the NEA decided to promote from within after a national search. Becker said one of his priorities as the new director will be to "be a catalyst for all sectors of the literary community, to look for ways to partner with the for-profit and nonprofit sectors and broaden the audience for literature and support for the community of the book."
