Klein's Downsizes and Abandons Books by Kevin Howell -- 2/1/99
After more than 60 years, Klein's of Westport is about to come full circle in its development, with the recent decision to stop carrying books after the holiday season. In 1937, Henry Klein bought a Connecticut stationery store that added books, newspapers and magazines until it evolved into one of the region's most respected bookstores.
Scoffing at the rumor that Klein's was going out of business, owner Stanley Klein said, "We're downsizing. We're moving to the second floor of our building and Banana Republic will move into the ground level." Klein's of Westport has always stocked merchandise seldom found in bookstores. Besides stationery and office supplies, Klein's also carries cameras, stereo equipment, calculators, small televisions and portable CD players.
The store will make its move to the second floor "sometime in February or March," said Klein.
