Media Play, On Cue: Solid `98 Gains

Sales at Musicland's superstore division (Media Play, On Cue) rose 6.5% in 1998, to $627.9 million. The gain was led by a 7.2% increase in comparable-store sales in the year. At the end of 1998, Musicland operated 69 Media Play stores and 162 On Cue outlets.

The strong performance by its superstore division, particularly that of Media Play, helped Musicland's net income jump from $14 million in 1997 to $38 million last year. Sales in the year rose 4.5%, to $1.84 billion.
