Maureen Golden To Depart B&N For Workman

Steven M. Zeitchik -- Publishers Weekly, 6/21/1999

Maureen Golden, a longtime Barnes & Noble executive, has left the company and will join Workman Publishing where she will serve as senior marketing director, reporting directly to Bruce Harris, Workman's publisher and COO.

Golden, a 23-year B&N veteran, had served in many positions, including general merchandise manager and, most recently, v-p of marketing and advertising. She told PW that she is sad to leave but is "excited about getting even closer to product." No one had been named to replace her at B&N by press time last week.

At Workman, Golden will occupy a position formerly held by Andrea Glickson. Golden will concentrate on sales conferences, trade shows, catalogues and the development of sales and marketing material, among other responsibilities. Glickson will now focus on the house's Brain Quest and What to Expect brands, and will report to Golden.

"Maureen is incredibly well-acquainted with what drives a book at retail," Harris said. "I think publishers constantly need refreshment of that."

Like many New York publishers, Workman has streamlined the number of titles it releases -- the fall list has only 17 books -- to devote more resources to those it d s publish. Harris added that over 30% of all Workman titles have sold more than 100,000 copies.
