IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE
-- 3/16/98

Laura Numeroff, illus. by Felicia Bond. HarperCollins/Geringer, $14.95 (32p) ISBN 0-06-026686-4

What might happen? Well, for starters, the pig will want something to go with her pancakes, as young fans of these collaborators' If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Moose a Muffin will anticipate. And they'll know that chances are, this curly-tailed creature will wreak comical chaos as a creatively jumbled stream of associations races through her mind. Kids won't be disappointed: keeping her patient hostess hopping, this energetic porcine visitor overflows the girl's bubble bath, tap dances on the table, poses for a photograph atop a sofa (in turn precariously perched upon two armchairs) and builds and decorates a tree house. All of which, of course, stirs up the diminutive porker's appetite, bringing this buoyant caper full circle. Bond's jovial pictures keep the title character in constant motion, her feet frequently off the ground. Among the slew of images that will bring on smiles: the heroine laying happily on the table, legs crossed, licking her empty pancake plate, and staring at readers with eyes wide and ears dripping with glue (which call to mind the stickiness of the delicious syrup she poured on her pancakes). Numeroff and Bond's scrumptious recipe continues to satiate. If you give a child this book, chances are, they'll devour it eagerly. Ages 3-7. (May)
