Ebrary, Taylor &Francis Ink Deal
Paul Hilts -- 1/1/01

Ebrary Inc., the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based online research provider, has announced an agreement with academic publisher Taylor & Francis, to provide search, browsing and printout capability for 17,000 T&F titles in the humanities, engineering and social sciences. T&F's four imprints--Routledge, Garland Press, Spon Press and Psychology Press--will make available to ebrary.com users all of their backlist and "the vast majority" of Taylor & Francis's frontlist, according to a company spokesperson.

"This agreement follows closely our decision to make all our titles available as e-books alongside their traditional print versions by early next year," Christoph Chesher, T&F's director of sales and marketing services told PW, referring to a July agreement T&F signed with Versaware (News, July 17). "We want to ensure the widest possible audience for our scholarly materials through the services of technology partners, while retaining control of traditional publishers' concerns such as pricing and distribution, just as we do with print. What particularly attracted us to ebrary was their recognition of these concerns, along with their sophisticated software that allows per-page print charges, and pay-per-use where appropriate, alongside the free browsing."

Besides the free browsing feature, ebrary encourages users to buy printed and electronic editions of works through links to online and local booksellers.

Two V-ps Added
Ebrary this week also announced the appointment of two new vice-presidents, in marketing and finance. Patricia Marriott brings more than 20 years' experience in marketing of high-tech products to her new post as v-p of marketing. Prior to joining ebrary, Marriott was director of corporate marketing at Active Software Inc., a producer of e-business integration software. She has also held senior marketing positions at Adobe Systems, and Electronic Arts.

Diane Klein, the new v-p of finance, has for the past year been a management consultant to Internet and traditional entertainment companies. Previously, Klein was v-p of finance and administration for the startup of Fox Television Studios.
