Travel with junior has never been so much fun--or so well covered by travel guides."With the economy booming, family travel is increasing," says Jamie Miller, lifestyles acquisitions editor for Prima Publishing, which is expanding its Travel with Kids series this fall to include Walt Disney World For Teens by Teens by Kim Wright Wiley and her 15-year-old daughter, Leigh Chandler Wiley, and New York City with Kids by Ellen Shapiro.
Fodor's is nearly doubling the number of titles in its Around the City with Kids series with the addition of Boston, Miami, London and Paris this fall, and Philadelphia and Toronto in the spring. By focusing on popular destination cities, these family-oriented books are poised at the intersection of two markets, says publisher Kris Kliemann. "We're seeing them placed on the travel shelf in bookstores, but we're also seeing them sold in major ways on the local shelves as well," she notes.
Passport Books is also launching a new series, Premiere Parent, which debuts with Los Angeles, and Open Road is adding Las Vegas and Italy with Kids to its Travel with Kids lineup. Coming in September from Interlink is Paris for Families by Larry Lain, while across the Channel Britain's National Trust offers The Family Handbook: The Essential Guide to Great Days Out by Charlotte Sankey and Katie Duckworth. Cadogan's Take the Kids series expands to include Ireland by Catharina Day, Amsterdam by Rodney Bolt and England by Joseph Fullman. Red Fox is offering Look Out London! A Child's Own Guide by Louise Nicholson, and Milkweed Editions kicks off a 16-book series for youngsters eight and up--and their families--with Stories from Where We Live: The North Atlantic Coast, edited by Sara St. Antoine.
Last month DK's Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides began "kidding around" with the addition of two youth-oriented tomes: Kids' New York and Kids' London; both bear the enticing cover lines "For Kids Who Know Where They're Going."
