We Need Him Now

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 10/1/2001

At a time when many author tours and media appearances have been canceled or rescheduled, one author seems to be in greater demand than ever. It's Harold S. Kushner, whose latest book, Living a Life That Matters: Resolving the Conflict Between Conscience and Success, was published by Knopf on September 9. Not that Rabbi Kushner was unaffected by the events of September 11: he was at Boston's Logan Airport that morning, about to board a flight to Toronto, when all air traffic was halted. His Toronto and Chicago trips that week were rebooked, but on September 12 Kushner appeared on CNN with Larry King, as well as later in the week with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, on Court TV and on Dateline. He also granted interviews to newspaper reporters all over the country, and his 20-city tour will continue into December. Knopf reports 145,000 copies in print after two printings. Kushner's other works, of course, include When Bad Things Happen to Good People, which since its 1981 publication has sold more than four million copies in hardcover, Quill trade paper and Avon mass market editions. Schocken has just issued a 20th-anniversary hardcover edition with a new preface by the author.
