by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 10/1/2001

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge has been named "Politician of the Year" for 2001 by PW's sister publication Library Journal. Since his first year in office, Ridge has steadily increased the state's funding for public libraries, with total funding for the current year pegged at $97 million. Ridge's commitment to libraries has resulted in longer hours, more materials and upgraded technology. Ridge was recently named to head the new government post of homeland security.
