Short Takes

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 10/8/2001

The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot has become a mini-industry, what with a hit movie, two current HarperCollins bestsellers—and now a new deal for the author for three more titles. Abigail McAden, a senior editor at the publisher's Children's Books division, made a mid-six-figure deal with agent Laura Langlie for the three new series titles, plus an untitled stand-alone; there are now foreign sales in 17 countries.... Basic Books editorial director Elizabeth Maguire paid a major advance to Robert Gottlieb at Trident Media Group for Rising Tide: The Untold Russian-American Submarine Story by Gary Weir of the Naval Historical Institute; in it, a group of U.S. and Soviet admirals will reveal the cat-and-mouse game played between the two nations' submarine forces, from the Cold War to the present. It's scheduled for publication in spring 2003.

Hot Deals will be away next week at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
