New Voices Still Strong

by Judith Rosen -- Publishers Weekly, 2/18/2002

Lynne and Bill Reed, the new owners of Misty Valley Books in Chester, Vt., had no regrets about continuing the annual New Voices readings series begun in 1995. "We had a fantastic weekend," Lynne told PW. This year's readings held late last month drew more than 120 people. Elinor Lipman, winner of the 2001 New England Book Award for fiction, moderated the readings, which featured first novelists John Griesemer (No One Thinks of Greenland, Picador), Elizabeth Inness-Brown (Burning Marguerite, Knopf), and Marc Estrin (Insect Dreams: The Half Life of Gregor Samsa, Blue Hen). Writer Robert Harnum (Exile in the Kingdom, Hardscrabble Books), whose previous books have appeared only in France, journalist Nicolas Howe (Not Without Peril, AMC), and short story author Heidi Jon Schmidt (Darling?, Picador) also participated.
