New Deal for Chabon

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 4/8/2002

Another defector from the Random family was Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon, who jumped to HarperCollins's new Fourth Estate imprint (see Book News, p.25) here for a new novel, Hatzeplatz, already sold to the movies on outline in a major deal with producer Scott Rudin, plus a book of short stories, for which Miramax has paid handsomely for a first-look movie option. The book deal, in which Fourth Estate's U.S. editorial director Clive Priddle and U.K. publisher Christopher Potter (joining with Harper Canada) paid a sum reported at just under $2 million for North American, was made with agent Mary Evans.
