A Touch of 'Glass'

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 4/22/2002

More than a touch, actually, as Anita Shreve's latest, Sea Glass, jumps onto our fiction list at #7 after a week in the stores. According to Little, Brown, the novel's 300,000-copy first printing is Shreve's largest hardcover number to date. No surprise--we noted on March 4 that the author's impressive post-Oprah numbers boded well for her new hardcover. Shreve's riding high these days, with the April 14 TV movie of The Pilot's Wife grabbing third place in the week's ratings (it's CBS's top-ranking TV film of the season) and Back Bay's trade paper edition of The Last Time They Met marking week #12 on our list (copies in print: 550,000). (This is the first time, notes the publisher, that Shreve has had a hardcover and a paperback on the charts simultaneously.) Among the highlights of her current 10-city tour is a B&N Main Stage appearance at the L.A. Times Book Festival. It looks as though Shreve might be poised to conquer another medium, too, with the film version of The Weight of Water set for a fall release (starring Sean Penn and Catherine McCormack) and Resistance, with Bill Paxton and Julia Ormond, currently in production.
