Move Over, Oprah

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 5/27/2002

"Ever since you got this book club, I feel a sense of power about you." So said Regis Philbin last Thursday on Live with You-Know Who—and it looks as though he's right. We wrote last week about the tremendous success of co-host Kelly's first "Reading with Ripa" pick, If Looks Could Kill (today marking week #3 on our charts), and now her second selection is off and running. Check out these numbers: following an extremely modest laydown of 6,000 copies, Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber: The Katya Livingston Chronicles has gone back to press three times and is now up to 160,000 in print. As this column goes to press, the St. Martin's/Thomas Dunne release is #1 at Amazon. Though Confessions is a first novel, British author Adèle Lang is clearly no stranger to offbeat titles, as attested to by her nonfiction works, Bosstrology, How to Spot a Bastard by His Star Sign and The Best Book of Girls Behaving Badly…Ever! Kelly called Lang's mock diary "very, very, very bitchy," describing it as "Bridget Jones's Diary meets Sex and the City." You go, girls.
