A Nanny of a Different Stripe

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 5/27/2002

While nannies Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus are holding sway in the fiction column, another erstwhile nanny is making her second appearance on our nonfiction list. The second memoir by celebrated TV nanny Fran Drescher, Cancer Schmancer, picks up where her earlier bestseller, Enter Whining, left off. Though this one, obviously, has more serious overtones, Drescher still retains her inimitable brand of humor as she chronicles her increasingly frustrating medical battle. The indefatigable author hit the publicity trail running the week of April 22, with appearances on The Tonight Show, Politically Incorrect and Later with Craig Kilborn; subsequent dates have included Today, Larry King Live, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Live with Regis and Kelly and The Rosie O'Donnell Show (said Rosie, "Every woman needs to read this book"). Signings in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Denver, San Francisco and Miami have attracted overflow crowds, and Drescher was a major hit at last month's L.A. Times Book Festival. Published by Warner Books on May 1, Cancer Schmancer has 151,000 copies in print.
