More B & N and Borders Superstores on the Horizon

by John Mutter -- Publishers Weekly, 5/27/2002

Coincidence? Both Barnes & Noble and Borders Books and Music have announced plans to open stores in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Phoenix suburbs in 2003.

The 25,000-sq.-ft. Borders store in Scottsdale will be the seventh Borders in the Phoenix area and will stock more than 200,000 book, music, DVD and periodical titles. The store is in The Promenade, a shopping center that celebrates Frank Lloyd Wright, who lived in and founded an architectural school in Scottsdale. The store will incorporate aspects of Wright's design.

B&N will open a 30,000-sq.-ft. store in Scottsdale, Ariz., in March 2003. The outlet will be in the Kierland Commons at Scottsdale Rd. and Greenway. It is the second B&N in Scottsdale, a Phoenix suburb. There are two B&Ns in Phoenix. Next door, in Mesa, B&N plans to open a 24,500-sq.-ft. store in October 2003. The branch is in the Dana Park Village Square on South Val Vista Drive and will stock nearly 200,000 books, music, DVD and magazine titles.

There are four other Barnes & Noble openings later this year. A 23,000-sq.-ft. Huntersville, N.C. store will be located at 8725 Townley Road and should open in late August. The same month, a 25,000-sq.-ft. store will open in McAllen, Tex., in the Northcross Shopping Center at 10th St. and Nolana.

B&N has also announced October openings for two stores: a 23,000-sq.-ft. store in Orlando in the Plaza Venezia at Sand Lake Rd. and R. Phillips Blvd.; and a 25,000-sq.-ft. store in Bozeman, Mont. The store will be in the Gallatin Valley Mall at 2825 W. Main St.

Borders plans to open two stores in California and Connecticut this September, each of which will stock more than 200,000 book, music, DVD and periodical titles. The 23,000-sq.-ft. Connecticut store will be in the Gateway Center on Route 7 in Wilton, in the southeastern part of the state. The 24,013-sq.-ft. California store will be in the new La Habra Westridge Plaza at the corner of Imperial Highway and Beach Boulevard in La Habra, which is in Orange County close to Los Angeles.
