A Mature Mentor

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 6/10/2002

The story of how one mature woman served as mentor to another is told in a book just signed for a "very significant" six figures by Gerry Howard for Broadway. It's When the Pupil Is Ready, and it forms the third part of a trilogy by Joan Anderson that began with the much-admired A Year by the Sea and An Unfinished Marriage. For this third volume Anderson turns to a memoir of Joan Erikson, widow of the celebrated analyst Erik, and how that life-loving 90-year-old employed some of the wisdom absorbed from her husband in nurturing the younger woman's sense of self. Joan Erikson is now dead, and the book is in part a tribute to her memory. Howard bought North American rights from agent Liv Blumer at Barney Karpfinger, and will publish in summer 2004.
