New York's McGraw-Hill Bookstore Closes

by Edward Nawotka -- Publishers Weekly, 6/17/2002

New York City's McGraw-Hill Bookstore, specializing in business books, closed on June 14. Competition from the Internet and the concurrent decrease in the sale of business titles were cited as the primary reasons for the closing.

Spokesperson April Hattori told PW, "Given the increasing online demand for professional publishing products, it made sense to close the physical store."

Founded in 1960, the 12,000-square-foot store had a space below street level in Rockefeller Center, near the entrance to the subway. Despite its name, the store carried a stock of 35,000 titles from all publishers and probably one of the most comprehensive selections of professional books on the East Coast. The store had 19 employees.
