Spanish Book Output Up

Mainland Spain's publishers produced 62,525 titles last year, of which 55,738 were new. Despite the rise in production, the total number of copies printed was down from 233.2 million in 2000 to 218.6 million. Other statistics published in the Spanish journal Delibros: of the grand total of new and reprinted books, 48,500 were published in Castilian, the national language; 6,669 in Catalan and regional tongues. Another 1,231 were published in Galician, 885 in Basque. Some two-thirds of the country's publishing takes place in Madrid and Barcelona, the former stronger in school and reference publishing, the latter in general books.
