Branford Boase Award

by Julia Eccleshare -- Publishers Weekly, 7/1/2002

Five titles have been shortlisted for the 2002 Branford Boase Award: Jessica Haggerthwaite: Witch Dispatcher by Emma Barnes, illus. by Tim Archbold (Bloomsbury); The Beat Goes On by Adele Minchin (Women's Press); Cold Tom by Sally Prue (Oxford Univ. Press); (Un)arranged Marriage by Bali Rai (Corgi); and Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve (Scholastic). Established in memory of Wendy Boase, editorial director of Walker Books, and author Henrietta Branford, both of whom died of cancer in 1999, the award celebrates the most promising book by a first-time novelist and highlights the importance of the editor in nurturing new authors. The winner will be announced on June 26.
