First Novelist Hecht for Harper

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 7/8/2002

Having published two titles with question marks, Do the Windows Open? and Was This Man a Genius? at Random House—respectively a story collection and a book about the mysterious late comic Andy Kaufman—author Julie Hecht has now moved, with her editor Dan Menaker, to HarperCollins for her first novel. It's called The Unprofessionals and, says the editor, is about an "unlikely sad, funny and largely telephonic friendship" between an eccentric 49-year-old woman photographer and a young upper-middle-class heroin addict. Menaker bought world rights from agent David McCormick at the Collins-McCormick agency.
