Borders Enters Airport Market

by John Mutter -- Publishers Weekly, 7/29/2002

Borders Group plans to open its first Borders airport store in September—and may open as many as four other airport stores by the end of the year. The new Borders store will be in the Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky International Airport in a former Waterstone's site. The 1,030-sq.-ft. store is temporary and will be replaced by a 1,400-sq.-ft. store next spring. The store will offer some 6,000 titles, particularly bestsellers, fiction and books that "meet the needs of business and leisure travelers" as well as some book-related items and magazines.

Borders has also signed a lease for a site in Newark International Airport in Newark, N.J., that will include a cafe.

Borders's Waldenbooks division operates eight airport stores, the first of which opened in 1997.
