Morton Named to Head Aperture Books

by Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 8/12/2002

Aperture foundation, a magazine and book publisher of distinguished international photographers, has named Robert Morton to the newly created position of editor-in-chief of Aperture Books, effective immediately.

A spokesperson for Aperture said the appointment of Morton is an effort to create a formal management position for Aperture Books, a duty that was previously handled by Aperture's executive director. Morton was previously v-p, editor-in-chief and director of special projects at Abrams and worked for more than 20 years at the art book publisher. Morton has also worked at Doubleday, Bantam and Time-Life Books.

The Aperture Foundation continues to search for a new executive director following the sudden death of former Abrams president Paul Gottlieb (News, June 5) less than two months after he was appointed as Aperture's executive director.

Janice Stanton, Aperture's deputy director, said Morton's "vast experience" in art book publishing made him an "ideal candidate to lead Aperture's award-winning book publishing program."
