by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 8/12/2002

John Wiley spent approximately $232 million on acquisitions in the fiscal year ended April 30, 2002, the company said in its year-end filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The biggest outlay was the $182 million the company spent for Hungry Minds, the largest acquisition in Wiley history. The company also paid $16.1 million for the 47 higher education titles that it bought from the Thomson Corp. Four smaller acquisitions—A&M Publishing Ltd., GIT Verlag, Frank J. Fabozzi Publishing and Wrightbooks Pty Ltd.—cost a total of $35.1 million.

In the new fiscal year, Wiley paid $6.5 million for the 250 titles that it acquired from Prentice Hall Direct in June (News, June 10).
