Alpha Books Moving to Penguin

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/2/2002

Alpha Books, which has been part of Pearson Education's Pearson Technology Group, is being moved to Penguin Putnam. A Penguin spokesperson said Alpha will be making the transition from Pearson Technology over the next several months and should be fully integrated into Penguin by January.

Alpha, which has a backlist of about 400 titles, is best known for its Complete Idiots line. When the transition is completed, Alpha will become part of NAL, and its management staff will report to Kara Welsh, publisher of NAL. The Penguin spokesperson said that "for the foreseeable future" all of Alpha's publishing functions will stay in Indianapolis, although sales and distribution will be assumed by Penguin's paperback and distributor sales force.
