Book Country Returns to NYC

by Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 9/2/2002

New York Is Book Country, the city's annual celebration of books and authors, returns on September 25 with five days of literary events that will culminate September 29 with the annual book fair on Fifth Avenue. Last year's fair was canceled following the September 11 attacks.

This year's fair has a new executive director. Courtney Muller, who formerly managed BookExpo America, was named to succeed founder and longtime director Linda Exman (News, July 8). And for the first time, the fair has organized special themes to highlight each day of the event.

Wednesday is New York Is Cookbook Country and will celebrate cooking and eating. Thursday will be New York Is Film Book Country and will feature books and movies. Friday's theme is What the Boroughs Are Reading, and events will focus on libraries and local authors. Saturday will feature book-related happenings throughout the city.

The book fair on Sunday is expected to draw more than 250,000 visitors to Fifth Avenue between 48th and 57th Streets in Manhattan from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The street fair will offer an Antiquarian Row, a Spanish-language pavilion, an African-American literature section, forthcoming books, children's events and much more.
